Every September the great white sharks return to San Francisco. While their 800,000 human neighbors dine on steak, salad, and sandwiches, the white sharks hunt for their favorite meal . . .
At long last my debut picture book, Neighborhood Sharks: Hunting with the Great Whites of the Farallon Islands, will swim into stores everywhere on September 30th—just one week from today! It’s publication concludes the three-year journey of its making and, even more importantly, marks the beginning of my nearly three-decade-long dream of becoming a published children’s book author. Thank you for joining me on this adventure, whether you’re just tuning in now or have been on my team for years. This book and all future books to come are nothing without my readers, so I’m incredibly thankful and excited to finally share my love of sharks—and of the natural world—through these pages with all of you!
Neighborhood Sharks is a 48-page nonfiction picture book for kids ages 7-10 years old, published by Roaring Brook/David Macaulay Studio. It vividly recreates a day in the life of a Farallon white shark as it hunts, giving young readers and parents a close-up look at the ocean’s most fearsome and famous predator—just thirty miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. Based on research I did out on the water with the Farallon shark team (and real live white sharks!), the book shares the most scientifically up-to-date information on these unique animals, and is sure to astound young shark fans and their parents alike.
With three starred reviews to its name already, it’s off to a wonderfully promising start! Here’s what the critics are saying about Neighborhood Sharks:
✭ “For this debut picture book, the author joined researchers who tag and follow these sharks, and she’s distilled their findings in a way that’s sure to attract young readers…Full of the eww factor, up-to-date facts and kid appeal, this splendid, gory introduction is not for the faint of heart!” —Kirkus, STARRED REVIEW
✭ “Accurate and captivating…Shark lovers of all ages will enjoy poring over the intense, vivid images.” —School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW
✭ “Look closely at the cover of this impressive account of great white sharks off the Northern California coast: that bright red in the illustration is blood trailing from a chunk of freshly killed immature elephant seal—and a signal that Roy’s book will fully examine the sometimes chilling, always fascinating details of what makes this animal a predator.” —The Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW
