Yikes!! I’m so excited to share that yesterday morning at the 2015 ALA Youth Media Awards, Neighborhood Sharks was named a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book for 2014 nonfiction in children’s literature! WOW WOW WOW! The annual American Library Association mid-winter conference is held in Chicago, and culminates in an award ceremony for the top books published in the previous year including the mighty Caldecott, Newbery, and Printz awards. Of all the youth nonfiction books published in 2014,the Sibert committee selected one Sibert Winner and five Sibert Honor Books, including my first book, Neighborhood Sharks. The critical praise for Sharks has already been big, but this one really takes the cake.
I’m so deeply honored to have my debut book named among the most distinguished nonfiction youth books of 2014. Now so many more schools and libraries across the country are likely to hear about the book and share the Farallon white sharks with kids. Hurray for science and reading, I am over the moon!
To watch a replay of the live award ceremony webcast (with all those amazing librarians cheering in the background!) go here. The Sibert Awards start at minute 50:35, with Neighborhood Sharks named at minute 51:53.
A hearty congratulations to ALL of this year’s ALA winners, and especially to my fellow Sibert awardees: The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus by Jen Bryant, illustrated by Melissa Sweet (SIBERT MEDAL WINNER), Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, & the Fall of Imperial Russia by Candace Fleming, Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker by Patricia Hruby Powell, illustrated by Christian Robinson, and Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation written and illustrated by Duncan Tonatiuh.
