I’m not exactly sure what my new life as an author-mom looks like, other than that there’s a lot more baby in it than before. A baby—with its around-the-clock needs as it learns to eat, sleep, poop, and play—makes you appreciate every moment of downtime like you never could have before. “Oh my god, I have TEN MINUTES. I can get SO MUCH DONE in TEN MINUTES!”
Ten minutes is enough time to do the dishes and organize the recycling. Ten minutes is plenty of time to take a shower and get dressed. And ten minutes is also enough time to read through the latest draft of my elephant book manuscript, one section at a time, and take notes on where it needs revision.
I have until the end of this year to turn in all the remaining pieces of Elephant, including the diagrams, the final cover, and the final draft of the interior text. More decisions will follow in the new year—like finalizing the layout, the cover design, the subtitle, and many more minor tweaks—but January 1, 2016 is my next major deadline before the book marches forward to press.
It might take several rounds of babysitting. It will definitely take weekend and evening relief from my husband. But meeting my deadline can happen every day, ten minutes at a time, starting…
